Why it matters: Waters says the deal backs its push into a proteomics market it puts at about $2 billion, growing at a high single-digit rate, and creates a longer-term path toward blood-based screening.
Waters (WAT), the life sciences and diagnostics company, said on Tuesday that it has acquired MOBILion Systems, the developer of SLIM high-resolution ion mobility separation technology. The deal is already complete, according to the release, and Waters did not disclose financial terms.
What MOBILion makes: SLIM (Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations) separates molecules by size, shape and charge in milliseconds. Waters says pairing it with its mass spectrometers, including the Xevo MRT, is expected to increase proteome coverage, sensitivity and throughput for complex biological samples.
The AI angle: Waters pitched the deal partly around AI research. It says the combined technology can generate high-quality protein data at the scale AI foundation and frontier models need, and tied it to Waters AI Link, which brings Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP) to its waters_connect software, and to its participation in Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard research program, for "lab-in-the-loop" research.
The market: Waters puts the LC-MS proteomics market at about $2 billion, growing at a high single-digit rate, based on its own analysis. Longer term, it says the deal creates a path from protein biomarker discovery toward clinical validation and large-scale, blood-based screening, such as multi-cancer early detection and minimal residual disease monitoring. These are the company's own expectations.
