Why it matters: Paid subscribers who use both ChatGPT and Codex will draw from one allowance measured in tokens, so heavy use of one product can affect how much is left for the other.

OpenAI plans to combine the usage allowances for ChatGPT and its Codex coding agent on paid plans, according to a Help Center article on its site. Starting in December, the article says, the allowance on Plus, Pro and Business plans will be shared across ChatGPT and Codex as the company brings the agent features of its Work mode into the main ChatGPT experience. The article does not give an exact start date.

How usage will be counted: OpenAI says usage will be measured in tokens, the units of text a model reads and writes, and that the amount used depends on the model chosen and the task. More advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of the allowance, while Instant chat will not count against it, according to the article.

What users will see: the article says subscribers will be able to check their combined remaining usage and reset times under Settings, then Usage. Someone who reaches the limit can wait for it to reset, upgrade their plan or buy credits to keep using eligible features, OpenAI says.

OpenAI's expectation: the company says it is preparing the change to avoid disrupting workflows and that it expects most users to wait for usage resets no more often than they do now. That is OpenAI's own forecast; the article does not list allowance sizes for each plan.

Earlier changes: OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes show it raised the Work and Codex usage included in its Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans on Oct 29, doubling their previous allowance. As of Sunday, the release notes had no entry for the December change.
