Why it matters: Apple's China newsroom release sets dates for the first batch of Apple Intelligence features for users in China and names Alibaba's Qwen as a model option inside Siri and Writing Tools.

Apple says the first core Apple Intelligence features will open for testing in China on Nov 4 through the latest iOS developer beta, according to a release dated Oct 31 on the company's China newsroom. The company says it plans to bring the features to users in China when iOS 27.3 is released in December.

What is included: the release lists real-time translation (实时翻译) in Messages, FaceTime and Phone, Writing Tools, visual intelligence, the Clean Up tool in Photos, Genmoji, natural-language search in Photos, Memory movies, Priority Messages and summaries in Mail, Smart Reply, notification summaries, Reduce Interruptions, and summaries of audio and call transcripts. Siri also gets typing to Siri, which Apple says lets users type requests and keep context across a conversation.

Alibaba's Qwen: Apple says it has partnered with Alibaba (BABA) to add support for Qwen in some Apple Intelligence experiences, so users in China can use it directly in Siri, Writing Tools and visual intelligence, including for text and image understanding. Users can sign in with a Qwen account or with Sign in with Apple, and a Compose feature in Writing Tools lets Qwen write original content from scratch, according to the release.

What is not included: Apple says this update does not include Siri AI or the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features it announced at WWDC 2026. Support on platforms other than iPhone will follow after the necessary approvals are obtained, the company says. The release does not name the approving authority.

Devices: according to the release's footnotes, the features will work on iPhone 16 and later models, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone Air, with Siri and device language set to English and Chinese (Simplified), as the release lists it. Real-time translation through AirPods needs AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2 on current firmware.

The descriptions of each feature are Apple's own. The release is in Chinese, and the translations here are ours. Apple has not posted an English version of the release on its U.S. newsroom as of 8 AM ET Sunday, Nov 1.
